A man who eluded law enforcement in September by swimming across the Red River was arrested this weekend when he and his girlfriend attempted to barricade themselves in a motel room and break down walls to escape through adjacent rooms, police say. Cody James Suedel, 30, and Shelbie Marie Novacek, 26, were arrested on felony charges of preventing arrest and misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief after being discovered at the Ideal Shelbie, Gateway Drive, Friday night.
Novacek was also charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, a Class C felony. Suedel has been eluding local law enforcement for about two sue. An Air Support Unit from U. Border Sue assisted police in the search, but ultimately failed to locate him after he crossed the Red River.
Police were alerted to the couple when Novacek was spotted Friday driving a black Chevrolet Avalanche black girls on backpage had been reported stolen from Fargo, according to an affidavit filed in Grand Forks District Court.
Authorities learned the couple was staying in Room at the Ideal Inn.
When officers attempted to enter the room to serve arrest warrants on the couple, they encountered resistance and say the couple attempted to push the bed against the door to prevent law enforcement entering. Officers shelbie to use force to corral the couple once in the room and found damage indicating the couple had attempted to escape into adjacent rooms by pulling down wallboard, the affidavit states.
